Beauty is everywhere.
That is one of the things I learnt making jewels out of rubbish.
I have always been fascinated by the beauty and potential of insignificant or ephemeral objects, lost buttons, broken bits of toys, colourful wrappings…
So the 'Treasures from Trash' jewellery course I attended a few years ago at the marvellous City Lit in London was right up my alley.
During six brilliant lessons I plunged into the exploration of all sorts of ‘useless’ things, took flight on creative wings to imagine them as jewels and got stuck into mechanical problem solving to turn them into wearable ornaments.
I prototyped many different versions of 'beads' made with magazine cut outs, bubble wrap and fruit nettings.
I, who had always been in my head, found myself absorbed, happily present in the moment, making something with my hands.
The result was my ‘Rubbish Jewels’ collection and the beginning of an exhilarating journey of learning and discovery, looking for beauty and playful and ingenious ways to capture it.
